PRE-CONFERENCE WORKSHOP | SPACE – PLACE – PRECINCT

Background:

Hospitals, Universities, Research Institutes and other institutions are well connected across Australia, with strong ties in research, clinical trials, education and training. Collocation is closely linked to collaboration.

In the context of city-making, Health and Innovation Precincts are large and complex sites. Open campuses provide outdoor amenity shared by all; while housing demand and public transport often puts pressure on surrounding neighbourhoods.

Each precinct is different, with unique physical, social and cultural qualities that affect their function. This workshop proposal seeks to explore co-creation and co-design of place-specific precincts that benefit the community.

Focus Questions:

• How can Health and Innovation Precincts create high quality public space for the community?
• What are the common features of successful urban precincts that are distinctive, place-specific, and attractive?
• What is the role of government, developers, universities, hospitals, and other
• organisations in co-creating successful precincts?

Themes to Explore:

• Public Domain – architecture for the common good
• Design for Equity – architecture that’s inclusive, accessible and equitable
• Health-promoting – architecture embedded in nature, supporting population health
• Connecting with Country – Indigenous-led consultation, strategy and co-design
• Development Principles – funding, governance, commercial partnerships
• Diverse Precincts – Planning for a wide variety of functions, mixed-use and multi-use

Workshop Facilitators:

Alison Huynh is an architect and Associate Director at Bates Smart. She specialises in the masterplanning and design of health precincts; stakeholder engagement and strategic planning; and urban design. As a Board Member of Australian Health Design Council, Alison is engaged in advocacy for good design for health across Australia.

Matt Davis is an architect and Studio Director at Bates Smart. He is an expert in architecture, urban design, & planning, with experience in private practice, academia, and government. He is a prominent influencer of urban policy and projects in Australia through leadership roles with the inaugural SA State Planning Commission, Integrated Design Commission SA, and national Design Review Panels. Matt is a trusted advisor to organisations delivering ambitious policy reform and complex urban projects.
